Summary

Context

• Asana’s board view is one of the most commonly used view in the product – it allows customers to group and visualize task in vertical columns.
• There were long standing customer requests to be able to add a secondary grouping on board view, so users could visualize work in both column and row.
• Partnering with PM, engineers, and design system, I led the design to bring swimlanes functionality to Asana board view, as well as established a visual revamp of existing board view.

Solution overview

I designed a comprehensive solution for project managers that allows them to customize how board view is represented by introducing a new horizontal grouping option to the vertical grouping options. This unlocks more customization and flexibility for PM to represent their work for their specific use cases.

^Before: To view the work organized for each assignee, users need to readjust the filter setting throughout a meeting

^After: Users can now add a secondary grouping, and see each assignee’s work laid out in rows

Impact

⭐️ Highlighted as critical during customer renewal conversations representing $20M ARR

⭐️ Tackled one of the most voiced customer requests for board view.

⭐️ Added functionality that helps asana support enterprise customers and more complex uses cases.

⭐️ Modernizing a core project view UI that hasn’t been adjusted in a while, to align with design org visual initiative, improving the overall design and product quality of Asana.
